Mullite macro-needles for reinforcement of refractory castables

Ceramic macro-needles incorporation as reinforcement in commercial refractory castable was studied. (Ø2x20 mm) were made from kaolinite clay and gibbsite to obtain mullite the main crystalline phase. Specimens with ceramic evaluated by compression after being treated at two temperatures (815 1400 °C). The results compared those obtained using same concrete but reinforced steel fibers without reinforcement. Compression values presented specimens 74% 50% higher than exposition 815 °C, respectively. Based on these results, it established that are a feasible solution improve mechanical resistance of castables exposed high temperatures.
